New LCP product responds to electronics demand

TOKYO — Tokyo-based Polyplastics Co., Ltd. has released a new liquid crystal polymer (LCP) resin in response to the electronic industry’s growing demand for compact, thinner electronic components.

LCP is widely used in manufacturing electrical and electronic devices, for example for headphone parts and camera shutter plates.

According to Polyplastics’ website, LCP has a unique attribute — the thinner the product becomes, the greater its mechanical strength. LCP has a linear expansion coefficient close to that of metal and vibration-absorbing properties.

Polyplastics launched a new LCP product series, Laperos, on May 16. The company previously offered only the Vectra LCP product series, which is a registered trademark of U.S.-based pharmaceutical and chemical product manufacturer CNA Holdings LLC and manufactured and sold by Polyplastics under license.

In a company statement, Polyplastics said Laperos uses the company’s own molecular design technology and is an accumulation of several years of LCP research and development.

The resin maintains Vectra’s thermal resistance and mechanical properties but improves flow and has superior low-warp and dimensional stability properties, the company said.

Polyplastics said there is strong demand for improved LCP performance because the electronics industry increasingly wants compact, thinner electronic components.

Polyplastics manufactures engineering plastics, including acetal copolymer, polybutylene terephthalate, fiberglass-reinforced polyethylene terephthalate, polyphenylene sulphide and cyclic olefin copolymer.
