Auto supplier Prism Plastics LLC is investing $2 million in additional capacity at its plants in Michigan and Texas.

Prism will add six Toshiba injection molding presses — with 85-tons and 200-tons of clamping force — at its plants in Chesterfield, Mich., and Harlingen, Texas, the company said in a July 2 news release.

The expansion will allow the company to boost production by about 20 percent. Prism makes tight-tolerance parts used in seat belts, air bags, fuel components and brake systems.

The company launched in 2000 and in 2012 it posted $19 million in revenue. It has booked $24 million in business for 2013 and more than $30 million so far for 2014.

“Our niche — difficult-to-mold, functional, safety parts — requires us to take advantage of the latest technology at every step in our process to eliminate variation,” said Vice President Jerry Williams.

The new presses will allow the company to take on new parts in addition to higher volume production, he said.
