Despite peeling film, Luna Rosa Challenge wins first America's Cup semifinal race

Partial peeling of Clysar polyolefin shrink film off the frame of the Luna Rosa Challenge's wing sail hindered but did not stop the Italian team from defeating Artemis Racing of Sweden Aug. 6 in the first semifinal race of the America's Cup challenger series in San Francisco.

The plastic film began peeling off the frames to which it is glued before the start of the race, according to an America's Cup press release. "Bowman Nick Hutton fixed the issue with some tape, but the team was wary of the situation all day."

Race two in the semifinal series between the 72-foot-long wing-sail catamarans of Luna Rosa Challenge and Artemis Racing is scheduled Aug. 8.

An affiliate of privately held Cove Point Holdings LLC of New York acquired the Clysar division of Bemis Co. Inc. of Neenah, Wis., in May and renamed the operation Clysar LLC. Terms were not disclosed.

DuPont Co. started Clysar in 1963, and Bemis purchased the business in 2002.

Clysar manufactures high-performance films in Clinton, Iowa. The films are used mostly for packaging meat, poultry, produce, bakery, pizza, office supplies, hardware and consumer products.
