Dow Chemical details Gulf Coast expansion plans

AKRON, OHIO — Dow Chemical Co.'s expansion plans for the U.S. Gulf Coast are featured in this weeks' Material Insights video. AKRON, OHIO — Dow Chemical Co.'s expansion plans for the U.S. Gulf Coast are featured in this weeks' Material Insights video.

Midland, Mich.-based Dow will add capacity for enhanced polyethylene resin and polyolefin plastomers in Freeport, Texas, while increasing its ability to make low density PE and metallocene EPDM in Plaquemine, La. The moves are part of Dow's investment strategy to integrate advantaged shale gas,

Plastic film maker Bemis Associates Inc.'s first compounding acquisition also is featured in this week's video. Shirley, Mass.-based Bemis is buying PolyVisions of Manchester, Pa., for an undisclosed price. Bemis Executive Vice President Scott Howard said his firm wants to diversify into new markets and is interested in making more compounding acquisitions.

The video wraps up with news that Gevo Inc. has opened a plant making plastic feedstock paraxylene from biomass in Silsbee, Texas. Gevo is working with Coca-Cola on the project, which will make a biofeedstock that can be used in Coke's PlantBottles, which use bio-based PET resin. Coke has sold more than 15 billion PlantBottles since 2009 and wants to make all of its PET bottles from first-generation PlantBottle material by 2020.
