AKRON, OHIO — Dow Chemical CO.'s decision not to sell its plastics additives business after all is featured in this week's Material Insights video.

Midland, Mich.-based Dow had said in March that it wanted to sell the unit, which has annual sales of almost $600 million. But low bids have led the firm to reverse that decision. Dow CEO Andrew Liveris said the firm now is comfortable with running the plastics additives business for the next several years.

Americas Styrenics' declaration of force majeure on polystyrene resin also is featured in this week's video. The firm made that move after a Sept. 15 power outage at its PS plant in Torrance, Calif. Production should resume within 7-10 days, but resin shipments are expected to be delayed through mid-October.

The video wraps up with news of Clariant AG opening Color Works North America, a design lab at its color concentrates plant in West Chicago, Ill. The center covers more than 6,000 square feet and includes numerous pieces of testing equipment. Officials said the center and others around the world are designed to bring color into the early stages of plastic product and packaging design.
