DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY — Winners of the sixth annual awards run by the European Polycarbonate Sheet Extruders were announced at the K show.

The awards recognize achievements in PC in terms of innovation, sustainability and design, said Epse, which is a sector group of the Brussels-based European Plastics Converters.

Some 16 projects were nominated for the awards, including sports stadiums, public buildings and artistic installations.

“All the nominees are a perfect illustration of a wide variety of areas in which PC may be applied,” said Epse President Jean-Philippe Coste.

“It is not only used in construction and architecture, but thanks to its lightweight, high transparency and excellent processability, PC is often used in creation of artworks.”

Winner in the Innovation category was Sabic (Hall 6/D42) for its Lexan BIPV panels used in the Jean-Francois Daures-designed Grotte de Salamandre in France.

Judges said the qualities of the panels “open a vast area of new applications.”

Italian sheet extruder Dott.Gallina walked off with the Sustainability award for its work at Lamborghini’s protoshop, the first multistory building in Italy certified class A for low energy consumption.

The Epse awards jury said the use of PC sheets meant the building resulted in considerable energy savings.

And the design award was won by DS Smith Plastics (Hall 8B/C35) for its work on interiors at a student hall of residence in Barcelona, Spain.

One awards jury member said the project revealed the integration of PC into the design of the building “and fully contributes to the final wonderful result.”

Winners were presented with a trophy — naturally made of polycarbonate — made by Italian artist Davide Dall’Osso.
