Celanese Corp. has introduced an acetal copolymer it claims is well suited for blow and injection molded fuel tank applications.
At the K 2013 trade show, the Sulzbach, Germany, company unveiled Hostaform LPT POM to celebrate its 50th anniversary in acetal copolymer production. The product is toughened and provides low fuel permeation rates demanded in small off-road uses, jerrycans and other containers.
Celanese says the balance of impact resistance and durability allow customers to meet U.S. federal and California state permeation regulations for small vehicles with only a single-layer construction.
“Celanese specifically designed its Hostaform S 9364 LPI for injection molding and S 9364 LPB for blow molding to perform in fuel systems that use ‘advanced fuels’,” says George Zollos, Celanese market development manager for POM. New fuels often contain high levels of ethanol.
The company says its new acetals can replace traditional high density polyethylene tanks as permeation regulations become more stringent.
