Vitro Minerals Inc. has expanded availability of recycled glass powders with the opening of a plant in Jackson, Tenn.
The Conyers, Ga., firm says glass powders are a crystalline, silica-free alternative to traditional mined mineral fillers and extenders like calcium carbonate, clay, silica and nepheline syenite.
Vitro says its glass powders are available in closely controlled particle sizes from 0.5 microns up to 500 microns and are suited to plastics, coatings and other composites.
“Glass powders, in addition to being free of crystalline silica, offer a lighter weight, corrosion and abrasion resistant filler for polymer systems that have the added advantage of being recycled content,” explains Vitro President Joseph Keating. The Jackson plant can make 40 million pounds per year of glass powder from post-consumer and post-industrial sources.
