Burgsmüller GmbH of Kreiensen, Germany — an independent daughter company to KraussMaffei Berstorff GmbH — uses nanoparticles to make screw and barrel elements for twin-screw extruders.

The company has developed a new process to apply hard-coating layers made of closed nanoparticles, such as tungsten carbide, to the screw and barrel in extremely thin layers. That gives the parts optimum resistance to wear from corrosion, abrasion or adhesives. It is not necessary to treat the entire screw or barrel, said CEO Jans Biel.

"Through many years of intensive evaluation of wear patterns in zones in extruders of different manufacturers, with different screw designs and OD/ID-ratios, we precisely know which zones are exposed to intensive wear, and can also offer partially coated screws and barrels," Biel said.

He said the nano-coating serves as wear protection when running abrasive materials such as wood-plastic composites, standard and engineering plastics, biopolymers or contaminated recycled material.
