Last week, plastics were No. 1 at the box office

For once, the plastic that won the day at North American box offices didn't involve plastic surgery.

"The Lego Movie," built around the interlocking plastic bricks made by Danish toy company Lego Co., won the box office its opening weekend by selling $69.1 million of tickets. (Second place "The Monuments Men," featuring George Clooney, finished far behind in second place, with $22.7 million.)

Although made with computer animation, the movie features both established Lego characters and sets and creates some new figurines – but all of them stick to the existing limitations of real Lego blocks. Even the background settings use Lego style animated movements, with "crashing waves" made up of computer-animated substitutes for individual Lego blocks.

Whether the movie's success leads to more sales for Lego may not be known yet, but the company already is selling versions of the movie's characters and set pieces through its web site.

And according to the New York Times, the movie – directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller for Warner Bros. – already made back its $60 million production budget, so don't be surprised if there's a sequel.
