KraussMaffei Berstorff extends its line of compounding extruders with the cost-effective ModulPlus variety.

The company has shortened the manufacturing time by about two months, and reduced steel structural costs by up to 20 percent. As of mid-march, the Hanover, Germany-based KraussMaffei Berstorff has sold four ModulPlus lines to customers in Denmark and China.

A simple design keeps the metering, material handling, pelletizing and control modules almost unchanged from other compounding extruders — and still fully assembled in Hannover — the extruder is no longer integrated into the steel module. That offers free access to the extruder, at ground level.

The reduction in manufacturing time is because simultaneous operations can happen in Hannover, said Thorsten Schroer, assistant head of plant engineering at KraussMaffei Berstorff.

“A further plus factor is the possible international labor division: If necessary, assembly, completion and testing of the steel structure and peripheral components can be performed by the KraussMaffei Bertstorff subsidiaries in China and the USA, and the equipment can be subsequently be combined with the extruder that was manufactured in Hannover,” Schroer said.

The strategy fits with KraussMaffei Berstorff’s modular concept, which has sold more than 100 lines since it was introduced.

The machinery maker’s U.S. unit in Florence, Ky., is KraussMaffei Corp.
