New York City is in the midst of placing thousands of recycling containers in public spaces in an effort to capture more materials, plastics included.

The city Department of Sanitation already has deployed about 2,800 containers around the city in places such as parks, busy sidewalks, sporting venues, recreation centers and business improvement districts.

“New York City is a walking city and much of what New Yorkers throw into litter baskets is recyclable — papers, bottles, cups, and cans,” said Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia said in a statement.

A total of 4,000 newly designed recycling containers will be put into service this year around the city, the department said.

Adding more recycling bins is part of a goal to increase the city’s recycling rate to 30 percent.
