CHICAGO — SodaStream International Ltd., maker of home beverage carbonation systems, is using plastic to bring more flexibility to its consumers.
The Israeli company, with U.S. offices in Mount Laurel, N.J., has launched a line of single-use flavor capsules made from PET. Dubbed Caps, the capsules contain pre-measured flavor concentrate for a one-liter bottle of carbonated water. Consumers place the Cap onto a carbonated bottle of water and press to release the flavoring. Spent capsules can then be recycled, the company said.
Launched in the United States in November 2013, the Caps line anchored SodaStream’s display at the International Home + Housewares Show March 15-18 in Chicago.
SodaStream’s product line already includes bottles containing about 50 servings of flavor concentrate, enough to mix approximately 12 liters of homemade soda, with the consumer measuring flavoring by the capful. Caps, in contrast, provide a quick dose of flavoring and are “a great solution for those who really look for consistent dosing each time they make their own beverages,” Ilan Nacasch, SodaStream’s Chief Marketing Officer, wrote in an email to Plastics News.
Sold in packs of eight and available in a variety of flavors, the product answers a consumer call for more flexibility in home and on-the-go soda making, Nacasch added.
“The market is looking for more customization, more versatility, covering more usage occasions,” he wrote.
The company, which describes itself as an “earth-friendly” alternative to store-bought PET beverage bottles, says the carbon footprint of Caps is less than that of bottled ready-to-drink sodas. SodaStream did not disclose how much PET is used in each Cap.
Caps are manufactured in Israel and designed exclusively for use with SodaStream carbonation systems.
