The Friends of McHenry County College Foundation in McHenry, Ill., has awarded the first Robert D. Swain Scholarship to Lupe Ayala Ortiz of Woodstock, Ill.

Swain, an expert in colorants for the plastics industry, founded Chroma Corp. in 1967. He is a member of the Plastics Hall of Fame.

The $500 scholarship will be awarded each fall and spring semester to a student who is a child or grandchild of a Chroma employee. Chroma President and CEO Tom Bolger said the scholarship was established to honor Robert Swain and help out with college costs.

The scholarship money can only be used for tuition, fees and books ad McHenry County College.

Ortiz is the daughter of Chroma employee Leobarda Ayala.
