Logoplaste SA and ‘green’ Belgian detergents brand Ecover have developed a liquid soap bottle made from reclaimed ocean plastic. The Ocean Bottle container will also be fabricated from plastic made from sugarcane and material from conventional waste streams.

Philip Malmberg, chief executive of Ecover, said: “The scale of the ocean plastic problem is enormous — every year at least a million sea birds and 100,000 sharks, turtles, dolphins and whales die from eating plastic. There is no choice — we simply have to aim to clean up ocean plastic for good.”

The plastic marine litter is being sent to Closed Loop Recycling's plant in Dagenham, England, where it is processed in preparation for bottle production by blow molder Logoplaste of Cascais, Portugal.

The Ecover bottle is being launched in the United Kingdom in partnership with retail giant Tesco, which will be selling it in more than 150 stores.

Ecover discussed the bottle and its development in a video posted on its website.
