Plastics News and its sister publications together comprise the world's largest plastics publishing organization. Owned by the privately held Crain Communications Inc., these brands – which include Plastics News, Plastics News China, European Plastics News and Plastics & Rubber Weekly – encompass three print publications, four websites, more than a dozen eNewsletters, multiple conferences and some industry award programs. Other polymer-related publications owned by Crain include Rubber & Plastics News, European Rubber Journal, Urethanes Technology International and Tire Business.
IN PRINT: Plastics News is a 45,000-circulation, weekly newspaper serving primarily the North American market. Founded by Crain in Akron, Ohio, in 1989, it covers the business of the global plastics industry. Plastics News focuses on commercial, financial, legislative and market-related developments worldwide that affect North American plastic product manufacturers and their suppliers and customers. The publication's mission is to report completely, promptly, fairly and accurately, and to provide plastics industry officials with the market information and competitive intelligence they need to do their jobs more effectively.
ONLINE: The April 1996 launch of the PlasticsNews.com website turned the weekly newspaper into a global daily news service. The publication now offers more than 10 free e-mail newsletters, including PN Daily Email. Additionally, in 2012 PN launched a series of regular data products and market research reports that are offered for sale via the online PN Store.
IN PERSON - EVENTS: Plastics News organizes several events, including its annual Executive Forum and various business conferences in North America, covering such topics as automotive, medical devices, plastic caps and closures, workforce issues, sustainability, packaging and more. These serve as forums to present new products and ideas and for independent discussion of issues of concern to the industry.
AWARDS: Since 1996, PN has given its Processor of the Year Award to a North American plastics processor, and it honors the winner in a ceremony each year at the Executive Forum. Beginning in 2011, it also has presented PN Excellence Awards to processors for excelling in customer relations, employee relations and industry/public service. Beginning in 1998, PN also has honored the work of designers by presenting its IDSA/Plastics News Design Award at a conference organized by the Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. This award, which is co-sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America, is now given out as part of the design competition at the triennial NPE trade show.
Plastics & Rubber Weekly and European Plastics News
IN PRINT: Crain acquired Emap Communications Ltd.'s polymer-related assets in Europe in July 2007. Those properties, headquartered in Croydon, England, include the two leading English-language plastics publications in Europe – the fortnightly Plastics & Rubber Weekly and the monthly European Plastics News. PRW has been serving the U.K. plastics industry since 1964. European Plastics News was launched in 1974, and is the only pan-European magazine serving the entire plastics manufacturing sector.
IN PERSON - EVENTS: PRW launched the Plastics Design & Moulding exhibition in England in 2005, and it now takes place annually. The brand has added a Product Design + Innovation conference. EPN also organizes several specialized business and technical conferences across Europe each year.
ONLINE: Both publications have active websites – PRW.com and EuropeanPlasticsNews.com – and publish email newsletters.
AWARDS: The Croydon group launched its annual, black-tie Plastics Industry Awards in London in 2001, to recognize the achievements of the U.K. plastics industry.
Plastics News China
ONLINE: Plastics News launched the bilingual PN China eWeekly as a free, weekly email newsletter in May 2005, along with a companion website, PNChina.com. Both are offered in simplified Chinese and English. Beginning in January 2013, PNChina increased the frequency of its newsletter, now renamed the PN China Report, to twice weekly. It goes to nearly 10,000 subscribers worldwide.
