About The Plastics Blog
As editor of Plastics News, I scan scores of Web sites, emails and news releases daily, and stay in constant touch with our network of global staff reporters and correspondents -- the largest reporting team in the plastics industry. I distill the more interesting items into commentary for this blog. Plastics News, part of Crain Communications Inc., began publishing weekly news in 1989, and launched a bilingual China site in mid-2005. In 2007, Crain acquired the two leading English-language plastics publications in Europe - Plastics & Rubber Weekly and the monthly European Plastics News.

Bundanoon, Australia, bans bottled water

| 5 Comments | No TrackBacks

Bundanoon, a town with about 2,000 residents in New South Wales, is in the spotlight today, as it can claim to be the first town in Australia -- perhaps in the world -- to ban bottled water.

The town, which is about 2 hours from Sydney, had a community vote with about 400 people participating. Only two voted against the ban.

It will now be illegal for shops to sell bottled water. The town will install water fountains on main street "so people can fill their bottles for free," according to this story from London's Telegraph newspaper.

"Visitors to the town will also be discouraged, but not banned, from drinking bottled water," according to the report.

So what'll it be, Bundanoonans? Water fountains, a Coke, or a Foster's?

Are you kidding me? How much more B.S. are these self-righteous environmentalist gonna inflict upon the public? Isn't anybody getting tired of these people telling you how to live? If this kind of restriction happens in one country, it will spread to another. It's an arrogant attempt by arrogant folk that's bouncing around the planet like a violent game of pong... And it's getting out of hand. And more and more of these restrictions will progressively occur in the future. It'll happen slowly. You watch. Before you know it, most our freedoms we have today will disappear tomorrow. Soon, farting in public will be permitted hazardous and everyone will be banned from stepping outside their own house to keep the environment gas-free.

George Fee:

The problem is less the actual water, and more the pollution caused by the PET plastic bottles. PET plastic bottles last for upwards of 600 years, whereas oxo-biodegradable HD bottles can be made to biodegrade in less than 3 years. Same story with plastic carrier bags; instead of 200 years they can.

ali:

Congratulations Bundanoon. I really find it a good idea not to sell water but to provide it for free. This noble act must be generalised to all cities of the world.

Ali, Morocco.

Kati:
