A couple of plastic products are getting media attention today because of their connection with the Super Bowl.
The Facts newspaper in Clute, Texas, has a feature about Dow Chemical Co.'s Primacor resin, used in the face masks for both the Colts and Saints.
The coating being used during an event as global as the Super Bowl, which is seen by hundreds of millions of people around the world, shows how Dow products are applied, but also is fun for employees, Dow spokeswoman Tracie Copeland said."Being able to point to something is just fun," Copeland said. "It's nice to be able to say, 'Hey, I make that out in the plants and, because of what we make, we make those guys safer and keep the helmets stronger.'"
Meanwhile, up in New York at the Rochester Business Journal, the attention is on ice cream. More specifically, the Buddy Cone, a polystyrene ice cream packaging "system" from Buddy Cone Systems Inc., which the newspaper reports is being used at Sun Life Stadium in Miami.
"We've always known the Buddy System was a super product," President and CEO Robert Sotile told the RBJ. "Now, it's confirmed."
The Super Bowl is all about hype, right? Everything about it -- silly interviews, expensive commercials, huge half-time show -- screams "watch me, watch me."
So it's no surprise that some plastics companies are going to seek a bit of attention for their role in the spectacle.
Watch for more cool plastics-in-sports applications coming soon from the Winter Olympics.

Jokes aside.., the Superbowl 2010 Audi commercial parodying plastics, among others, will undoubtedly, have a long-term affect on consumer minds.. which will take some time to get over..,
Early 80s, Wendy’s Hamburgers had an ad that depicted.. Ronald McDonald taking a break from work and walk into Wendy’s for a Hamburger. Even though, it was done in a jest.. at the core.. it turned out to be malicious. At that time, McDonald’s strategy was to focus on kids.. (.one kid will bring in two adults..) while Wendy’s strategy was to focus on adults.. After a lengthy research, it was concluded that most kids under the age of 9.. agreed… if Ronald McDonald goes to Wendy’s.. they should too.., In a protracted legal action, the case was decided out of court..
Revert back to present.. It is time for the plastics industry to stop “Reacting” to every provocation and start taking “Decisive Actions”. … There are very few non-plastic parts in the interior of the Audi in question… Hard to fathom the lack of communication between Audi marketing and the plastics industry - the real cause of this faux pas.. Put the blame where it belongs…,
Only less than 30% of the population of United States is college educated and able to distinguish opinions in an intellectual frame of mind. Most opinions are based on emotions rather than facts.., I can see people watching this advertisement, very easily use it as truth . just like.. some of the teachers in elementary school, teach students –how to avoid plastics.. not because they are dangerous.. simply because it is a cool thing to do.., Don’t be surprised, if a Midwest farmer will soon start-up a Training Farm for Plastic Sniffing Aardvarks.. thar’s gold in 'em .. critters..
