Try to imagine life today without plastics, said Jeffrey Weinstock, an English professor and authority on American popular culture. There are cars filled with plastics, spiral-bound notebooks with vinyl covers, plastic milk jugs in nearly every refrigerator and toothbrushes that have become highly engineered plastic marvels.

Plastics’ image problem
 
Plastics and the American public have always had something of a love-hate relationship. Although it may sound odd to think of an inert piece of plastic as having an image problem, the industry has spent huge sums of money over the years trying to mold consumer opinion.
