US Army orders two thermoplastic bridges
BASKING RIDGE, N.J. (November 15, 2009) -- The U.S. Army has ordered two railroad bridges that will set the bar for load capacities on bridges made from plastics, with load ratings of 130 tons.

Reichhold opens unsaturated polyester plant in India
RANJANGAON, INDIA (November 10, 2009) -- Materials maker Reichhold Inc. has opened a plant making unsaturated polyester resins in Ranjangaon, India. Reichhold expects the material to be sold into wind turbines, glass-reinforced pipe, engineering stone, automobiles and other applications.

Yantai Wanhua's MDI used in China's high-speed railway
Yantai, China (November 9, 2009) -- Yantai Wanhua Polyurethanes Co.'s MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) products are to be used in the construction of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway in China – the world's largest polyurea waterproofing project.



Air Products opens speciality amines plant in China
NANJING (November 9, 2009) -- Air Products Chemicals Inc. has opened a new speciality amines plant in Nanjing, China, to support local customers in the polyurethane additives and epoxy markets.

Liansu builds extrusion plants across China
GUANGZHOU, CHINA (October 19, 2009) -- Liansu Group, one of China’s largest plastic pipe makers, has opened a new factory in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, to target growing domestic demand for infrastructure projects. The company has also broken ground on new extrusion plants in Daqing, Heilongjiang province, and in Urumqi, Xinjiang. Liansu is also planning a pipe factory near Xi’an, Shaanxi province.

Therma-Tru and Fypon merge, consolidate operations
MAUMEE, OHIO (October 15, 2009) -- The parent company of Maumee-based entry door maker Therma-Tru Inc. and Archbold, Ohio-based polyurethane and PVC millwork maker Fypon Ltd. are merging the two companies and consolidating some of the operations as part of a cost-cutting strategy. A small percentage of Fypon’s PU production in Archbold will be moved to the company’s plant in Yantai, China.

Dow Chemical unveils new solar shingles
MIDLAND, MICH. (October 11, 2009) -- Dow Chemical Co. on Oct. 5 unveiled a line of photovoltaic solar panels that can be integrated into rooftops with standard shingle materials. Dow's Powerhouse solar shingles integrate thin-film photovoltaic cells into a proprietary injection molded roofing shingle design. The solar shingle systems will be available in limited quantities by mid-2010, and Dow expects them to be widely available in 2011.



BASF gives updates on Chongqing MDI plant
LUDWIGSHAFEN, GERMANY (September 29, 2009) -- BASF SE is working with Chinese authorities to aim for mechanical completion of its proposed 400,000-metric tonne MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) plant in Chongqing by 2013 and commercial operation by 2014.

Rice based composites to challenge WPCs
COLOGNE, GERMANY (September 15, 2009) -- German company Münchener Boulevard Möbel (MBM) claims its new rice-based composite may provide an environmentally-friendly and better performing alternative to wood plastic composites (WPC) in applications such as decking.

Beijing Beipeng purchases XPS extrusion line


ZE75/KE250 line
BEIJING (September 1, 2009) -- Beipeng New Building Materials Co. Ltd. is the first customer in China for an expandable polystyrene foam board extrusion line from machinery maker KraussMaffei Berstorff. Beijing-based Beipeng will use the ZE75/KE250 Schaumtandex line to produce thermal insulation boards.

Nasdaq-listed ShengdaTech expanding additive plant
SHANGHAI (August 18, 2009) -- Growing demand in China’s construction and auto markets is causing plastic and rubber additive maker ShengdaTech Inc. to open a new facility this month in Zibo, Shandong province.

Gurit acquires stake in Chinese firm
ZURICH (August 4, 2009) -- Swiss composite firm Gurit plans to strengthen its position in the wind turbine market after negotiating a deal to acquire a majority stake in an unnamed Chinese structural foam company in Qingdao, Shandong province. Gurit also owns a foam plant in Tianjin.

U.S. partner to help Shandong Rike export additives
PHILADELPHIA (August 4, 2009) -- Chinese additive supplier Shandong Rike Chemical Co. Ltd. has struck a marketing partnership with U.S. firm Performance Additives LLC, hoping to take advantage of what they say are opportunities for new players in North America’s beleaguered additives sector.

Nissei boosts capacity of new Taicang factory
TAICANG, JIASNGSU (August 4, 2009) -- The global economic downturn has pushed Japanese injection press maker Nissei Plastic Industrial Co. Ltd. to significantly boost capacity for its planned Chinese factory, its first manufacturing facility outside Japan.

China’s manufacturers mull ways to boost industry

HONG KONG (June 30, 2009) -- Stung by the collapse of their export markets, Chinese manufacturers should not look for that big volume business to return and instead ought to explore new areas such as manufacturing products targeted at niche markets, using better industrial design and looking inward at Chinese culture for inspiration. That, at least, was some of the advice coming from manufacturers and industrial designers -- like Eric Chan, a native of Guangdong province and now president of industrial design firm Ecco Design Inc. in New York -- at a Hong Kong forum on reinvigorating the sagging manufacturing industries in the Pearl River Delta.

Qinchuan-Future Plastic mulls initial public offering

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 30, 2009) -- Strong growth in the wood-plastic composite market is prompting joint venture Chinese wood-plastic composite equipment maker Qinchuan-Future Plastic Machinery Co. Ltd. to consider an initial public offering, a company executive said in an interview at NPE2009. The Baoji, Shaanxi province-based company hopes to raise funds for an expansion to handle increasing demand in both China’s domestic wood-plastic composite market and in exports, said Wayne Song, director of one of the joint venture partners in the machinery maker.
