Merquinsa bioplastics used in shoes, goggles
By Frank Esposito
PLASTICS NEWS

CHICAGO (July 28, 2009) -- Thermoplastic polyurethane make Merquinsa has placed its new renewably sourced materials in running shoes and ski goggles.

Smith Optics Inc. is using a grade of Merquinsa’s recently launched Pearlthane ECO Bio TPU in its Evolve-brand collection of goggles. The grade of Bio-TPU used in the goggles has 44 percent renewable content, officials with Barcelona, Spain-based Merquinsa said at NPE2009 in Chicago. Renewable content for the full range of Bio TPU can range from 20-90 percent.

In the footwear market, Brooks Sports Inc. Plans to use another grade of Pearlthane Eco in molded parts in upcoming designs, officials said.
