AKRON, OHIO (January 15, 2008) — China and India will command a good share of the spotlight at the upcoming Plastics News Executive Forum 2008 in Tampa, Florida. Three presenters will
address the challenges of global sourcing and supply-chain management, as well as some of the opportunities presented by the fast-growing Chinese market. Jim Walter, senior vice president for
worldwide quality assurance at toy giant Mattel Inc., is among those who will speak at the March 9-12 conference.
Additionally, a high-level delegation of plastics executives from India plans to attend the event to seek partners and promote what that country has to offer. Reliance Industries Ltd. is organizing
the delegation, which is expected to include presidents and chief executives from up to 20 plastics processing companies, including injection molders, film and pipe extruders, blow molders,
rotomolders and compounders. Kamal Nanavaty, president of polymers and crackers for Reliance, will head the delegation and speak at the Forum.
The 25,000-employee RIL, India’s largest private-sector company, is the biggest resin producer in India by far, and the seventh largest polypropylene maker in the world. With US$27.2 billion in
annual sales, it accounts for 2.9 percent of India’s gross national product and 12 percent of its exports. The firm recently began to roll out a chain of retail supermarkets and convenience stores
across India and also is involved with some of the country’s economic development zones.
The March 10 China-focused panel, meanwhile, will follow an opening keynote address by Walter, and include Jeremy Haft, president and founder of Washington, D.C.-based outsourcing specialist BChinaB
Inc., and Dan Harris, partner at Seattle, Washington-based Harris & Moure PLLC law firm and author of the China Law Blog.
Few topics have roiled the plastics industry more in recent months than the quality problems related to the recalls of millions of China-made products. These actions stirred vigorous debate about
outsourcing, quality control, corporate accountability, product design, legal liability and supply chain management practices. Haft, Harris and Walter will debate those issues.
Plastics News’ 10th Executive Forum will feature 30 presenters covering everything from resin prospects and sustainability to innovation, education and merger-and-acquisition trends. View
