DuPont showing renewably sourced engineering resins
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 30, 2009) -- DuPont Co. arrived at NPE2009 with a product lineup self-described as the broadest range of renewably sourced engineering resins in the industry. “We have a full commercial line, and can bring performance equal to or better than that of petroleum-based products,” DuPont Engineering Polymers global business manager Marsha Craig said in an interview at NPE.

NatureWorks doubling Ingeo PLA resin capacity
CHICAGO (June 30, 2009) -- NatureWorks LLC’s long-awaited second line to make polylactic acid comes on stream this week, boosting annual capacity for Ingeo PLA resin at its plant in Blair, Neb., from 150 million pounds (68,039 metric tons) to 300 million pounds (136,078 metric tons).

Rubbermaid to use Mirel bioplastic in consumer product
CHICAGO (June 26, 2009) -- Bioplastics maker Metabolix has landed a pretty big fish in the sea of consumer products: Consumer and commercial products maker Newell Rubbermaid, which will use Mirel-brand bioplastic made by Telles -- the bioplastics joint venture between Metabolix and Archer Daniels Midland -- in an unspecified consumer-based, retail product.



New plant will bring Clear Path 280 million lbs of PET capacity

CHICAGO (June 26, 2009) -- The first phase of the massive PET recycling plant being built by DAK Americas LLC and Shaw Industries Group Inc. will be up and running early next year in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Phase two is set for a 2012 start.

Invista plans to start manufacturing nylon 6/6
CHICAGO (June 26, 2009) -- Invista is the newest player in the global engineering polymers market. The company has announced plans to begin production of nylon 6/6 resin at several locations, including Chattanooga, Tenn., and Kingston, Ontario.

BASF expands specialty plastics portfolio at NPE
CHICAGO (June 25, 2006) -- BASF Corp. is broadening its specialty plastics lineup with new grades of thermoplastic polyurethane, nylon 6 and polybutylene terephthalate.

European plant closures are in LyondellBasell’s sights
CHICAGO (June 25, 2009) -- LyondellBasell Industries AF SCA has turned its attention to its European polyolefins operations as part of its plan to restructure and deal with a $23 billion debt burden. The Rotterdam, Netherlands-based company filed for Chapter 11 on Jan. 6, and although this covered U.S. operations and not those in Europe, its asset review is taking in global operations so that it can meet a restructuring target of cutting $700 million in fixed costs by the end of 2010.



Nova Chemicals to invest in Mideast polyethylene production

CHICAGO (June 24, 2009) -- Nova Chemicals Corp. plans to invest significantly in Mideast polyethylene production, including a 1.1 billion to 1.2 billion pound-per-year Advanced Sclair PE plant and a 10 percent smaller gas-phase PE plant, according to recently installed Nova CEO Chris Pappas.

Biodegradable PVC product draws interest at NPE
CHICAGO (June 24, 2009) -- An increased focus on sustainability is driving demand for Bioflex, a biodegradable PVC product made by Kenrich Petrochemicals Inc. and marketed by Biotech Products LLC. Bioflex uses Biochem, a nontoxic formula that enables landfill decomposition.

Sabic IP continues to expand worldwide
CHICAGO (June 23, 2009) -- Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (Sabic) isn’t letting short-term economic woes slow down its global plans. The company has contracted with warehouses in Texas and New Jersey to import commodity resins from its plants in the Middle East. The firm’s Sabic Innovative Plastics unit also by the end of the year will open a new plant making Ultem-brand polyetherimide in Cartagena, Spain, and next month will expand engineering resin compounding capacity by 30 percent in Nansha, China.

Metabolix offers new bioplastics to replace PC, ABS
CHICAGO (June 23, 2009) -- Bioplastics maker Metabolix Inc. announced it has launched new materials through development deals with Nypro Inc. and Teknor Color Co. Both deals involve Telles, the joint venture between Cambridge, Mass.-based Metabolix and agricultural giant Archer Daniels Midland Co. of Decatur, Ill.

IDI Composites buys plants in China and France
NOBELSVILLE, INDIANA (June 22, 2009) -- IDI Composites International has acquired thermoset material plants in France and China in a deal that, officials said, will make the firm the largest supplier of thermoset molding compounds in the world.

Group seeks moratorium on degradable PET containers
SONOMA, CALIFORNIA (June 24, 2009) -- The National Association for PET Container Resources called on brand owners and bottle makers to refrain from using PET containers with degradable additives. “We want the people making claims about bottles with degradable additives to first substantiate and document their claims” that there will be no adverse effect on the recycling stream or the next-life product, said the group’s executive director.

China revises Albemarle’s global balance

GUANGZHOU (June 16, 2009) -- Breakthrough growth in China, combined with a downturn in other regions, is making the Chinese market more important than ever on Albemarle Corp.’s global roadmap. Sales generated in China will make up for nearly a quarter of the U.S.-based company’s 2009 global sales, a substantial jump from 5 percent in 2008, according to John Sun, Greater China managing director. During a recent interview at the Cross-Strait Plastics Industry Summit 2009 in Guangzhou, he told Plastics News that the breakthrough’s relatively short time period was made possible partly by supplying polymer curative to China’s government-funded, high-speed railway projects.

Lanxess buys Chinese TMP maker Jiangsu Polyols
SHANGHAI (June 16, 2009) -- Speciality chemicals group Lanxess AG has bought China-based Jiangsu Polyols Chemical Co. Ltd., a maker of polyols including trimethylolpropane (TMP), located in Liyang, west of Shanghai.
