Thai court suspends 25 petrochemical projects
SINGAPORE (October 19, 2009) -- A Thai court has ordered the suspension of 25 petrochemical projects valued at 130 billion baht ($3.9 billion). But construction work is continuing because the government has not issued a suspension order, according to Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTT).

Bayer's German sites back to full work schedule
LEVERKUSEN, GERMANY (October 15, 2009) -- Bayer MaterialScience AG says it will bring the reduced hours work plan at its German sites to an end on Nov. 1, putting some 4,100 workers back on full salary. The company said all regions experienced a loss in sales, and the least affected market -- Asia Pacific -- saw a 23 percent decline.

China orders antidumping tariff on nylon 6/6
BEIJING (October 13, 2009) -- China’s Ministry of Commerce has concluded that nylon 6/6 resin imported from the United States, Italy, the United Kingdom, France and Taiwan is hurting China’s domestic nylon manufacturers. Antidumping duties in the range of 5.3 percent to 37.5 percent have been imposed, starting today.

Study suggests link between BPA and aggressive behavior
WASHINGTON (October 12, 2009) -- A study published online in a scientific journal suggests a possible link between aggressive behavior in 2-year-old girls and prenatal levels of bisphenol A in their mothers. But the authors were quick to add that their study has a number of limitations.

Metabolix wins federal grant to develop biodegradable resins
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (October 11, 2009) -- Bioplastics maker Metabolix has received a $350,000 federal grant that will be used to develop new, biodegradable resins for blow-molded bottles. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Co-operative State, Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) is providing the grant to Cambridge, Mass.-based Metabolix.

BASF targets China’s automakers for engineering plastics

SHANGHAI (October 6, 2009) -- BASF’s simulation software for testing engineering plastics – Ultrasim – has been available at its Shanghai technical center since 2007, but the company now is hoping it will catch the attention of China’s domestic automakers. "There is the potential to increase (engineering plastics) by more than five-fold," said Hermann Althoff, group vice president of BASF Engineering Plastics Asia Pacific.

The companies plan to jointly invest $1.4 billion to produce downstream chemical intermediates and specialties for the Chinese market.

Chrysler replaces paper manuals with plastic DVDs
DETROIT (September 29, 2009) -- Chrysler Group is replacing its traditional owner's manuals with DVDs and an abridged printed guide in an effort to reduce costs and save 930 tons of paper annually. The searchable DVDs, designed for viewing at home or on some vehicles' entertainment systems, each contain an owner's manual, warranty information, direction for navigation and entertainment systems and a guide for 24-hour towing assistance.
