Chinese supplier targets U.S. chlorinated PE market
CHICAGO (July 7, 2009) -- Sensing an opportunity from Dow Chemical Co.’s closure of a U.S. chlorinated polyethylene facility, Chinese CPE maker Dandong Decheng Chemical Co. has struck a deal with
American distribution firm T&T Marketing International.
Teijin restructuring, exits NatureWorks PLA venture OSAKA, JAPAN (July 7, 2009) -- Osaka-based Teijin Ltd. has ended its involvement in the NatureWorks LLC polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastics business, transferring its 50 percent shareholding over to its
joint venture partner Cargill Inc. The NatureWorks manufacturing plant in Blair, Neb., is currently the world’s largest PLA bioplastic production plant.
Tests show recyclers can separate PLA from PET WASHINGTON (July 7, 2009) -- Some recyclers have been concerned that as more companies use bottles made from polylactic acid, those containers may contaminate the PET recycling stream. But tests at a
full-scale recycler suggest that near infrared technology can effectively separate PLA and PET.
BASF, SINOPEC expanding Nanjing joint venture NANJING, CHINA (July 7, 2009) -- BASF SE and Sinopec have received a green light from Beijing to expand their 50-50 joint venture BASF-YPC Co., Ltd. (BYC), in Nanjing, Jiangsu province. The Chinese

DuPont showing renewably sourced engineering resins
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 30, 2009) -- DuPont Co. arrived at NPE2009 with a product lineup self-described as the broadest range of renewably sourced engineering resins in the industry. “We have a full
commercial line, and can bring performance equal to or better than that of petroleum-based products,” DuPont Engineering Polymers global business manager Marsha Craig said in an interview at NPE.
NatureWorks doubling Ingeo PLA resin capacity
CHICAGO (June 30, 2009) -- NatureWorks LLC’s long-awaited second line to make polylactic acid comes on stream this week, boosting annual capacity for Ingeo PLA resin at its plant in Blair, Neb.,
from 150 million pounds (68,039 metric tons) to 300 million pounds (136,078 metric tons).

European plant closures are in LyondellBasell’s sights
CHICAGO (June 25, 2009) -- LyondellBasell Industries AF SCA has turned its attention to its European polyolefins operations as part of its plan to restructure and deal with a $23 billion debt burden.
The Rotterdam, Netherlands-based company filed for Chapter 11 on Jan. 6, and although this covered U.S. operations and not those in Europe, its asset review is taking in global operations so that it
can meet a restructuring target of cutting $700 million in fixed costs by the end of 2010.

Group seeks moratorium on degradable PET containers SONOMA, CALIFORNIA (June 24, 2009) -- The National Association for PET Container Resources called on brand owners and bottle makers to refrain from using PET containers with degradable additives.
“We want the people making claims about bottles with degradable additives to first substantiate and document their claims” that there will be no adverse effect on the recycling stream or the
next-life product, said the group’s executive director.
Nova Chemicals to invest in Mideast polyethylene production

10 percent smaller gas-phase PE plant, according to recently installed Nova CEO Chris Pappas.
