SCHAFFHAUSEN, SWITZERLAND (Feb. 4, 11:10 a.m. ET) -- GF Piping Systems Ltd., part of Georg Fischer AG, opened a new factory in Ratnagiri, India, south of Mumbai, on Nov. 4. GF has had a sales presence in India for 20 years, but this is its first manufacturing operation there.

MIDLAND, MICH. (Feb. 3, 10:15 p.m. ET) – Midland is the preferred site for Dow Chemical Co.’s first full-scale production plant for Powerhouse-brand solar shingles, the company announced Feb. 3. Midland-based Dow said the business could employ 1,200 jobs by 2014. The Michigan Economic Development Corp. is considering up to $140 million in economic incentives for the plant.

FAIRLAWN, OHIO (Feb. 3, 4:15 p.m. ET) -- Omnova Solutions Inc. -- a maker of specialty polymers and commercial wallcoverings -- rang up a profit of $26 million in its 2009 fiscal year after reporting a small loss the year before.

MEXICO CITY (Feb. 2, 4:45 p.m. ET) -- Latin America’s largest producer of PVC pipes, vinyl resins and compounds is optimistic Mexico’s antitrust authority will approve its contentious purchases of a rival plastic pipe maker and a PVC resin producer by the end of March.

MESA, ARIZ. (Jan. 27, 1:20 p.m. ET) -- American Insulock Inc., a developer of polyurethane insulating blocks, plans to establish a new manufacturing facility in Riydah, Saudi Arabia, in partnership with PU specialist Woodbridge Group, Al Mobty Co. and Hinduja Group (L&T Group). When completed, the plant will produce 130 million blocks per year.

XIAMEN, CHINA (Jan. 26, 10:30 a.m. ET) -- Lifetime Products Inc., which claims to be the world’s largest maker of blow molded high density polyethylene folding tables, picnic tables and chairs, is hoping that a visit to its China factory by U.S. Ambassador Jon Huntsman Jr. will help launch a line of mass produced housing for low-income and disaster-stricken regions.

DALLAS (Jan. 20, 2:55 p.m. ET) -- Atrium Cos. Inc., a major fabricator of vinyl windows and doors, has filed for Chapter 11 protection as part of a pre-negotiated financial restructuring. President and CEO Gregory Faherty said the restructuring will put Atrium in a much stronger financial position. Atrium plans to complete the restructuring in three to four months.

HOLLAND, N.Y. (Jan. 18, 5 p.m. ET) -- Staroba Plastics Inc. has purchased the EcoStar roofing tile business from Carlisle Cos. Inc., effective Jan. 1. Staroba, a Holland-based injection molder, has manufactured the EcoStar products since the inception of the product.

EVANSVILLE, IND. (Jan. 14, 11:25 a.m. ET) -- The new X-flex product from Berry Plastics Corp. could be thought of as body armor for buildings. Designed with input from the Department of Defense, the composite film tape, designed to act as ballistic wallpaper that minimizes blast damage from explosions, has been in service with the U.S. military since 2009.

Demand and production will still fall short of a less-than-stellar 2008, but for the first time in a long time, experts say things are finally moving in a positive direction.

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO (Jan. 11, 11:40 a.m. ET) -- Canada’s plastics processors can expect a rebound in 2010, according to the Canadian Plastics Industry Association. “I believe there will be meaningful recovery,” said CPIA President and CEO Mark Badger. Mississauga-based CPIA estimated Canada’s plastics industry output fell about 20 percent in 2009.

GLEN ELLYN, ILL. — The Plastic Pipe and Fittings Association has appealed a ruling by a lower court that threatens to halt the use of cross-linked polyethylene pipe in plumbing in California. The appeal, filed Dec. 31, means that PEX piping, which has been approved for use by the California Building Standards Commission, can continue to be used, pending the appellate court ruling.

MOUNT VERNON, OHIO (Jan. 7, 1:05 p.m. ET) -- Replex Mirror Co. Inc., dba Replex Plastics, is taking solar collector research to a higher level. The company is sharing a $1.25 million grant from the Ohio Third Frontier Commission to develop prototype mirrors that collect sunlight for photovoltaic cells. Previous work by Replex resulted in thermoformed acrylic mirrors coated with aluminum or silver that concentrate sunlight. The current grant will be used to make prototypes.
