Automated Packaging stressing sustainability

The Streetsboro-based maker of packaging systems late last year introduced the Autobag Pacesetter PS 125 and PS 125 One Step. Both are table-top bagging systems capable of bagging 25 bags per minute in hand-load operations of low to medium volume. Both machines have turntable designs, allowing them to spin within their footprints.

With the new models, customers such as makers of hardware, electronics, crafts and medical parts “can package right at the workstation, with no packaging area added on,” sales director Jeff Hannah said during a recent interview in Streetsboro.

The new systems make use of APS' Autobag-brand pre-opened bags in sizes from 2-10½ inches wide and 4-17 inches long.

Another recent new product launch at APS is EarthAware, a line of eco-friendly bag film materials for the firm's AirPouch-brand packing systems. EarthAware is a linear low density polyethylene film with a proprietary additive that causes biodegradation in nine months to five years, officials said.

EarthAware biodegradable air pillows are available in a standard green tint for customer awareness. On average, one small box of APS air pillows can replace 15 bags of Styrofoam-brand “peanuts,” Hannah said.

The EarthAware line also includes a new film made entirely from recycled pre-consumer bags and film scrap. APS officials described EarthAware recycled air pillows as “a cost-effective alternative to other eco-friendly materials.”

In addition to its headquarters, APS operates a machinery assembly plant in Streetsboro, as well as two nearby operations — a film plant in Garfield Heights and a bag-making plant in Bedford Heights. APS also operates an AirPouch plant in Keyser, W. Va., where the firm also recently acquired an additional building. APS also has a manufacturing plant in Malvern, England.

The privately owned firm was founded in 1962 by brothers Hershey and Bernie Lerner and Arthur Gould. All three founders still own a majority stake in the firm, with employees owning the rest.

Hannah said the APS business model allows the firm to interact with its customers on multiple levels — through bag-making machines or film and bag products.

“We look at it the same way that Gillette looks at its razors and razor blades,” he said. “The machine is the avenue to get the plastic through.”
