Silgan moving equipment to Ligonier, Ind.

LIGONIER, IND. (March 10, 11:50 a.m. ET) -- Silgan Plastics Corp. will spend $5.5 million in machinery upgrades to its blow molding plant in Ligonier.

According to the March 9 story from fwdailynews.com in Fort Wayne, Ind., equipment will come from the Silgan Plastics plant in Port Clinton, Ohio, that the company said in February would be idled by the third quarter of 2010. About 24 new jobs would be created at the Ligonier factory.

The story quoted Ligonier plant manager Bob Rose, and said the company was seeking a tax abatement from the Ligonier city council. Silgan officials were unavailable for comment. The company’s Web site lists high density polyethylene spray bottles among the plant’s products.

Chesterfield, Mo.-based Silgan Plastics ranked No. 8 in Plastics News recent survey of North American blow molders, with related sales of $651.9 million. The company has blow molding plants in Ligonier; Ottawa, Ohio; Cape Girardeau, Mo.; Deep River, Conn.; Flora, Ill.; Franklin, Ky.; Houston; Lachine, Quebec; Langhorne, Pa.; Mississauga, Ontario; Monroe, Ga.; Pen Yan, N.Y.; Plainfield, Ind.; Scarborough, Ontario; Triadelphia, W.Va.; Woodstock, Ill.; and two plants in Woodbridge, Ontario.

Silgan Plastics is an operating company of Silgan Holdings, a packaging company with 2009 total sales of $3.1 billion. The parent company has a total of 66 manufacturing plants in North and South America, Europe and Asia.
