ANN ARBOR, MICH. (Feb. 8, 4:45 p.m. ET) -- Last year was a dismal one for industrial machinery, and robots shared in the pain -- but the worst appears to be over, according to the Robotic Industries Association. RIA reported that a total of 9,451 robots were ordered by North American manufacturing companies in 2009, down 25 percent from 2008. Dollar sales fell 36 percent, to close out 2009 at $569.2 million, the trade group said.

TROISDORF, GERMANY (Feb. 3, 12:10 p.m. ET) -- Extrusion machinery producer Reifenhäuser GmbH & Co. KG announced job cuts on Jan. 22 affecting staff in its blown film machinery plants. The brunt of the cuts will be borne by staff at its Troisdorf, Germany, headquarters, where 60 employees will lose their jobs. Another 18 jobs will go at the former Kiefel Extrusion GmbH plant in Worms, Germany, which Reifenhäuser acquired from Brückner Technology Holding GmbH in 2009.

SALZBURG, AUSTRIA (Jan. 29, 1 p.m. ET) -- Biaxially oriented film line supplier DMT Technology GmbH has entered bankruptcy proceedings, according to reports from of Austria that quote DMT lawyers saying its credit dried up because of the financial crisis. Austrian credit reporting agency Kreditschutzverband von 1870 said DMT has “a solid core, so there is justified hope for the future,” adding that creditors were prepared to help the firm survive.

Updated Jan. 28, 4:30 p.m. ET) -- Gloucester Engineering Co. Inc. has laid off an unspecified number of manufacturing employees and frozen orders from suppliers, citing the tough economy that has squeezed cash flow at the film equipment company. A top company official denied a local news report that the company had suspended work and shut down.

AKRON, OHIO (Jan. 26, 9:45 a.m. ET) -- The pace of M&A activity for plastics materials quickened in 2009 — and greater things may be in store for 2010. Investment firm Blaige & Co. LLC tracked 92 global deals in resins, colorants and compounding in 2009 — up from 70 in 2008, a one-year increase of more than 30 percent. Those 92 deals were the most materials deals tracked by Blaige since 2003, when 96 were reported.

TOKYO (Jan. 26, 8:40 a.m. ET) — In a sign of continued financial pressure on the Japanese injection press industry, Japan Steel Works Ltd. said Jan. 26 it was buying a majority stake in its smaller rival Meiki Co. Ltd., building on an existing partnership between the two firms.

PARIS, ILL. (Jan. 25, 12:45 p.m. ET) -- Cadillac Products Packaging Co. has expanded its blown film plant in Paris, Ill., and added a nine-layer line, for barrier food packaging and industrial film. The big line, installed in mid-2009, marks two firsts — the first nine-layer blown film line for Cadillac Products Packaging and the first nine-layer Hosokawa Alpine American sold in the United States, according to officials of the film producer and the machinery supplier.

GIBRALTAR (Jan. 22, 11:25 a.m. ET) -- Gibraltar-based Melea Ltd.-- which owns all of the gas-assisted injection molding patents marketed by Gain Technologies Inc. -- has been placed into liquidation, putting the company’s full patent portfolio on the market.

MOUNT GILEAD, OHIO (Jan. 21, 5:05 p.m. ET) -- The HPM plastics and die-casting equipment operation has closed, according to a local government official and three other sources -- bringing to an end more than 130 years of machinery manufacturing in Mount Gilead. On Jan. 21, the company issued a statement saying it had "temporarily suspended operations" on Jan. 4. According to several sources, Dec. 18 was the last day for employees at the 400,000-square-foot HPM America LLC plant, which made injection molding machines, sheet extrusion lines and die-casting machines.

SCHWERTBERG AUSTRIA (Jan. 20, 12:45 p.m. ET) -- Japanese injection press maker Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Plastic Technology Co. Ltd. will sell multicomponent Engel presses to customers in Japan, both companies announced Jan. 21. Both companies said they will benefit from the agreement. Mitsubishi rounds out its multishot product offerings, and Engel gains access to the tough-to-crack Japanese market.

CHICAGO (Jan. 19, 9:25 p.m. ET) -- After more than 70 years of hosting its annual show in Chicago, the International Housewares Association is considering moving to rival venues in Las Vegas or Orlando, Fla., for 2012, becoming the latest trade show to mull abandoning the South Loop convention hall for cheaper climates.

KONSTANZ, GERMANY (Jan. 18, 8:50 a.m. ET) -- Ralf Schneider GmbH is bringing its three ancillary equipment businesses -- Motan GmbH, Colortronic GmbH and Colortronic Systems AG -- into a new single entity under the Motan-Colortronic name. Colortronic North America Inc., which was acquired by ACS Group of Schaumburg, Ill., in 2003, is not affected by the deal.

YORK, PA. (Jan. 15, 5:10 p.m. ET) -- Stephan Braig is stepping down as president and CEO of Engel Machinery Inc., the North American operation of Austrian injection press and robot maker Engel Holding GmbH. He will be replaced by Mark Sankovitch, a 20-year Engel veteran who currently is the Midwest and Southern regional sales manager. Braig said he wants to stay in plastics. “I’m talking to a few companies and my intent is to stay in the plastics industry,” he said.
