FRANKFURT, GERMANY (Feb. 3, 4:30 p.m. ET) -- Catherine Hayes, vice president of global marketing at 3D Systems Inc. of Rock Hill, S.C., said the prototyping and modeling industry is approaching the “I” age, where consumers will have three-dimensional printers at home as prices drop below the 10,000 euro (about $13,900) barrier. MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. (Feb. 3, 3:55 p.m. ET) -- The Wilco family of companies in Maryland Heights, Mo., keeps growing even amid an unpredictable U.S. economic recovery. The firm — which consists of Wilco Molding Inc., Wilco Die-Tool-Machine Co. and Wilco Automation LLC — recently opened a 12,000-square-foot automation facility for value-added turnkey operations, and is in negotiations to buy an adjacent property and expand its 25,000-square-foot molding and tooling shop by another 5,000 square feet. RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CALIF. (Feb. 1, 10:20 a.m. ET) -- Pyramid Mold & Tool has invested about $200,000 for a second injection molding press, a water temperature controller and a material dryer for its year-old technical center. The firm now anticipates investing about $350,000 during 2010, primarily for mold making equipment. February 1, 2010
PEABODY, MASS. (Jan. 29, 11:45 a.m. ET) -- In a move to better tap into the growing Asian market, Synventive Molding Solutions is expanding into a second facility in Suzhou, China, with plans to more than double its production capacity within two years. The manufacturer of hot runners and components said the expansion is necessary to keep up with its continued growth in the region. January 29, 2010
OLDCASTLE, ONTARIO (Jan. 28, 10:25 p.m. ET) -- The Canadian government is sending more than C$3.6 million (US$3.37 million) to toolmakers in southwestern Ontario to help them expand and invest in new equipment. The funds are part of the C$62 billion (US$58 billion) Canada’s Economic Action Plan designed to boost small and midsize manufacturers. January 28, 2010
GIBRALTAR (Jan. 22, 11:25 a.m. ET) -- Gibraltar-based Melea Ltd.-- which owns all of the gas-assisted injection molding patents marketed by Gain Technologies Inc. -- has been placed into liquidation, putting the company’s full patent portfolio on the market. January 22, 2010
CHICAGO (Jan. 19, 9:25 p.m. ET) -- After more than 70 years of hosting its annual show in Chicago, the International Housewares Association is considering moving to rival venues in Las Vegas or Orlando, Fla., for 2012, becoming the latest trade show to mull abandoning the South Loop convention hall for cheaper climates. DETROIT (Jan. 18, 11:20 a.m. ET) -- Chrysler Group is speeding up payments for some engineering, design and development work and taking other actions to improve its badly frayed relations with suppliers. The new policies -- to be fully rolled out by the end of January -- will apply mainly to parts Chrysler will buy for compact and mid-sized cars based on a Fiat platform. Chrysler projects volumes to reach about 700,000 by 2014. January 18, 2010
CLEARWATER, FLA. (Jan. 14, 3:30 p.m. ET) -- American Tool & Mold Inc., and its injection molding division, American Technical Molding, are about to be joined by a third branch of the Clearwater company, which will do liquid silicone rubber tooling and molding. January 14, 2010
SEAFORD, DEL. (Jan. 12, 12:15 p.m. ET) -- A Delaware company that make plastic balls has purchased its primary tooling supplier, which it plans to relocate. The partners of Craig Technology Inc. and Flow Smart Inc. have completed the purchase of Linus Tooling Inc of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., and are planning to move to a site across from its Seaford-based operations. DONGGUAN, CHINA (Jan. 7, 2:05 p.m. ET) -- Managers like Hercules Shum at Cosmos Tooling Solutions Ltd. in Dongguan’s hard-hit tooling sector see technical upgrading as critical to their companies' survival, and they are organizing to try to help local firms better position themselves for international markets. PAVILION, N.Y. (Jan. 4, 1:50 p.m. ET) -- Syntec Optics, which bills itself as the largest independent manufacturer of custom polymer optics in North America, has opened a new clean room at its Pavilion plant. The Class 10,000 clean room will be used for assembly and testing of precision polymer and glass optical systems that are highly sensitive to environmental particulates. January 4, 2010
MILWAUKEE (Dec. 28, 3:05 p.m. ET) -- Triangle Tool Corp. is filling its previously-announced 18,000-square-foot expansion with new equipment, including an OKK Corp. milling machine that will help the Milwaukee-based toolmaker fill demand for its expanding business in specialty machining. LANSING, MICH. (Dec. 22, 3:15 p.m. ET) -- Michigan's tax free Tool & Die Recovery Zone program for tool and die shops is continuing to expand, and may eventually include space for 10 more zones than the state had originally planned. The state originally launched the program in 2005 as a way to help struggling toolmakers by allowing them to operate free from all state and local taxes for up to 15 years. The zones help participating companies lower their operating costs, which helps them compete, state officials said. December 22, 2009
