WASHINGTON (May 22, 10:25 a.m. ET) -- A year ago, Nestlé Waters North America Inc. CEO and President Kim Jeffery boldly proclaimed the company would build a $30 million, joint venture, bottle-to-bottle recycling plant on the East Coast to produce 40 million pounds of PET annually and have it up and running within a year. “My target date has obviously come and gone,” said Jeffery. “I was too optimistic. But we are going forward with it.”
WASHINTON (May 22, 10:20 a.m. ET) -- Recycling the large bulk rigid plastic containers that grocery stores use in the back rooms of their deli, bakery and seafood departments is moving closer to reality. The effort could create a collectable source of polypropylene and high density polyethylene for recyclers scrambling to meet the increasing demand for recycled resins. Two six-month pilot programs — the second one just completed in April — have the industry optimistic that it can capture that material, which is estimated to be 354 million pounds annually just among medium and large supermarket chains.
WASHINGTON (May 22, 10:15 a.m. ET) -- Recycling messages used by bottled-water companies on overwrap for 24-pack cases aren’t being noticed by 70 percent or more of shoppers, a survey shows, and many of those messages don’t even resonate well with consumers.
WASHINGTON (May 22, 10:10 a.m. ET) -- You might think a 50 percent boost in PET recycling capacity since the start of 2010 is a solid harbinger of nothing but good times ahead. But like many plastics recycling issues, it’s a mixed bag — particularly juxtaposed against a very slow increase in the pounds of PET resin recycled and collected. And some think it could lead to some PET recyclers going out of business.
CHICAGO (May 21, 5:05 p.m. ET) -- PET recycler Pure Tech Plastics LLC has slowed production as it looks for a buyer, just two months after it was sued by beverage giant Coca-Cola Co. for breach of contract.
ATLANTA (May 21, 4:45 p.m. ET) -- Materials firm Georgia Gulf Corp. is producing new flexible PVC compounds using Javelin-brand bioplasticizers from Segetis Inc.
DAYVILLE, CONN. (May 21, 4:10 p.m. ET) -- Putnam Plastics Corp. has extended the utility of plastics in medical technology with its development of high-strength monofilament fibers.
CLEVELAND (May 21, 1:30 p.m. ET) -- Rotational molding volume will track U.S. gross domestic product, continuing a trend that began in the mid-1990s, economist Peter Mooney, said at a Society of Plastics Engineers conference.
MUNICH, GERMANY (May 21, 1:15 p.m. ET) -- After two recent management changes at Netstal-Maschinen AG, parent company KraussMaffei Group last week shed some light on product development strategy at the two companies.
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM (May 21, 1:15 p.m. ET) -- Nano materials have the potential to expand the uses of plastics because of the possibility of creating more functionality and versatility.
AACHEN, GERMANY (May 21, 12:45 p.m. ET) -- Laser penetration welding is an established means of bonding laser-transparent and laser-absorbing versions of the same polymer.
AKRON, OHIO (May 21, 1:20 p.m. ET) — A compounder’s plan to restore a 105-year-old mill building is featured in this week’s Material Insights video, as well as acquisitions and expansions news from Mitsui Chemicals and its Prime Polymer joint venture. The video wraps up with news of engineering resins compounder RTP’s expansion plans.
WEINHEIM, GERMANY (May 21, 1:15 p.m. ET) -- Elastomer expert Freudenberg Group is setting up a new plant for the production of polyurethane seals in Taicang, Jiangsu province, China.
KENOSHA, WIS. (May 21, 12 p.m. ET) -- Xten Industries LLC has expanded its injection molding business by acquiring Paramount Plastics LLC of Lockport, Ill. Paramount, with annual sales of $18 million, specializes in large-tonnage molding using engineering resins, especially for automotive markets.
WESTLAKE, OHIO (May 21, 12 p.m. ET) -- Nordson Corp. has entered into an agreement to purchase Extrusion Dies Industries LLC, which makes flat dies and extrusion coating dies, Westlake-based Nordson announced May 21. Nordson is paying $200 million for EDI Holdings Inc., but the final price is subject to adjustment, as provided in the purchase agreement.
