LyondellBasell to halt PP production at Ill. site
MORRIS, ILL. (May 9, 3:30 p.m. EDT) -- World polypropylene leader LyondellBasell Industries AF SCA will stop PP production at its plant in Morris later this year, ending 30 years of PP work at the site. The plant will continue to make polyethylene, but its four PP lines, with total annual capacity of 280 million pounds, will be decommissioned.

Virginia aiding Canon in $625M project
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. (May 9, 3 p.m. EDT) -- Canon Inc. is investing about $625 million to expand its Canon Virginia Inc. unit — creating 1,035 jobs, including positions in mold making and plastics processing. The project includes construction in Newport News of a 700,000-square-foot facility.

Nicholas Plastics bought by holding company
ALLEGAN, MICH. (May 9, 2:50 p.m. EDT) -- Huizenga Group has acquired profile extruder Nicholas Plastics Inc. Privately held Huizenga, a holding company in Grand Rapids, Mich., said it plans to keep Nicholas’ two plants open.

Apex adding equipment, clean room
PITTSFIELD, MASS. (May 9, 1:30 p.m. EDT) -- Apex Resource Technologies Inc. is investing $1.5 million in new machinery and a 3,000-square-foot Class 100,000 clean room as it ramps up its medical molding capacity.

GDX equipment auction set for May 13-14
WABASH, IND. (May 9, 1:20 p.m. EDT) -- Nine extrusion lines and 42 vertical injection molding machines will be up for auction May 13-14 at the former GDX Automotive Inc. sealing plant in Wabash.

PVC, PET prices up, further hikes sought
AKRON, OHIO (May 9, 9:35 a.m. EDT) -- Sales of PVC and PET resins haven’t set the world on fire so far in 2008, but prices for those materials are going up anyway. Average per-pound selling prices for PVC in North America are up an average of 2 cents since March 1, and PET prices have taken a 5 cent climb since April 1.
