WINDSOR, ONTARIO - Active Mold Plastic Products Ltd. is boosting its short-run production and mold-tryout capacity with the addition of two large-tonnage injection presses. The Windsor custom molder began operating a new, 3,000-ton HPM press in mid-November and plans to begin operating a reconditioned, 2,000-ton HPM press in mid-January, according to general manager Neil Arnold. He said his company paid about C$1.5 million (US$1.1 million) for the two presses, supplied by En-Plas Inc. of Scarborough, Ontario.
``We have a lot of work right now,'' Arnold said. ``We specialize in Tier 2 [automotive] work such as emergency service.''
Arnold said the new presses will help ensure that Active Mold has free machine time in 1995 to take on work at short notice.
Active Mold's new 3,000-ton press has been molding lawn furniture, but the firm hopes to use it for large auto parts as well. Active Mold already has produced instrument panel systems, fascias, other large auto parts, and an all-plastic shopping cart on a Cincinnati Milacron 3,000-ton press. The firm has nine presses, including machines as small as 400 tons.
Arnold said the 4-year-old private company does not release sales figures.
