Tuscarora Inc. has reached an agreement to buy a leading British molder of protective foam packaging materials. The purchase of M.Y. Trondex Ltd. of Northampton, England, should be complete by early February, said James Brakebill, vice president for manufacturing of Tuscarora, a publicly held plastic and paper packaging firm based in New Brighton, Pa. Terms were not released.
``The purchase gives us the chance to take advantage of relationships we have with multinational customers in North America,'' he said. ``Trondex did many of the same things we do, and we have had an ongoing relationship with them for some time.''
Trondex is the first excursion into the European market by Tuscarora, the largest U.S. manufacturer of custom molded products made from expanded foam plastic materials.
Trondex, owned by M.Y. Holdings, a London-based diversified packaging holding company, has plants in Northampton, England, and Glasgow, Scotland, and serves a broad range of industrial customers throughout the United Kingdom. It specializes in design and production of molded and fabricated foam plastic products, and posted about $10 million in sales in 1994.
``Trondex was not an essential part of M.Y. Holdings' core business,'' Brakebill said. ``That is why it was an attractive acquisition for us.''
Tuscarora will operate its United Kingdom business from the plants in Northampton and Glasgow with the current Trondex work force under the Tuscarora name.
Tuscarora, which had about $120 million in total sales in 1994, designs and manufactures interior protective packaging and materials-handling products for a broad range of manufactured goods. The firm also makes molded foam plastic and thermoformed components for a growing number of industrial and consumer-product applications.
Brakebill said the company is in the process of moving its thermoforming operation to a new, 100,000-square-foot plant in Bur-lington, Wis. It also has a thermoforming plant in Beaver, Pa.
