'Trash Facts' book covers solid waste
``Trash Facts II,'' from the Waste Policy Center in Sterling, Va., offers information on the content, regulation and management of municipal solid waste.
In 1993, plastics made up 9.3 percent of the total municipal solid waste mix by weight, or 19.3 million tons, according to WPC. Paper and paperboard, at 77.8 millon tons, accounted for 37.6 percent, and yard wastes, at 32.8 million tons, 15.9 percent.
Plastics packaging contributed 8.3 million tons to the municipal solid waste stream in 1993, or 4 percent of the total tonnage.
Landfills, waste-to-energy incineration, source reduction and recycling all are covered as ways to manage municipal waste.
J. Winston Porter is both the booklet's author and WPC president. ``Trash Facts II'' is part of a series that includes ``Superfund Facts,'' and ``Environmental Facts.''
``Trash Facts II'' is printed on recycled paper. It costs $1 for each copy up to nine, and 50 cents each for 10-99 copies. Lower unit rates are available for 100 copies or more.
