Taiwan-based custom molder Great City Industrial opened its first Mexican molding facility, called Plastico Gigante de Mexico, May 1 in Ju rez. Mario Martinez, a company spokesman, said the parent company has been a custom molder for the electronics industry for 20 years. One of its customers, Philips Consumer Electronics, asked Great City if it would put a plant in Juarez to support its expanding computer monitor manufacturing plant.
The initial, 30,000-square-foot manufacturing area will house 11 presses with clamping forces of 140-1,300 tons. The firm said it expects to add 45,000 square feet and double the number of presses later this year.
The company employs 120 in Ju rez, but expects that number to exceed 300 by year's end.
``Many of the electronics companies have Far East suppliers, but there is a problem with communications and just-in-time delivery,'' Martinez said. ``We'll be providing Philips with same-day service in the same time zone and in the same language.''
Martinez said Great City Industrial brought ``a lot of expertise and technical assistance'' from Taiwan to establish the plant. ``We'll continue to work closely with our mother company to take advantage of mold building in Taiwan where there is good quality and good pricing.''
Plastico Gigante plans to support only Philips initially, but expects to add other customers eventually.
