Alternate gating techniques can reduce by 15-30 percent the wall thicknesses of injection molded containers, said Jordan Robertson of Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd. of Bolton, Ontario. Robertson said that procedure allows injection molded part weight that approaches that of thermoformed parts. The key is to combine the technologies of higher-strength materials and rim gating, which uses multiple gates on the inside top lip of the container with venting on the outside bottom center.
The resin molded was a blend of high density polyethylene and Affinity polyolefin plastomer from Dow Plastics.
Tests showed that rim gated parts need only 60 percent as much clamping force as conventionally molded parts.
