An $11 million, U.S.-Chinese joint venture will mold writing pens in China using injection molding machines from Van Dorn Demag Corp. of Strongsville, Ohio. Van Dorn, which exhibited at Plastics Fair Cleveland, held June 13-15, announced in May it has sold four HT Series presses to the firm, a venture between Hartcourt Cos. of Los Angeles and Xinhui Hartcourt Modern Pens Ltd. of Xin Hui, China.
The pen factory bought three 230-ton presses, each with a 14-ounce shot size, and one 120-ton press with a shot size of 8ounces, a company spokesman said at the show.
Molded products include pen and marker barrels, caps, nibs and plugs.
Van Dorn worked with the partners and the mold maker, Cavaform Inc. of St. Petersburg, Fla. The molds have 32, 48 and 64 cavities. Machine cost was not disclosed.
Moldflow Inc., based in Shelton, Conn., recently completed the first phase of research and development for a new injection compression molding software program. The software is currently undergoing testing and evaluation at GE Plastics and Ford Motor Co., partners with Moldflow in the collaborative development effort.
According to Moldflow, automotive components represent a primary application for injection compression molding because of the need for low stress, thin walled parts with an aesthetically pleasing surface finish.
The new software will be made available on a commercial basis after the results of the tests and evaluations are completed.
GE's Pete Zuber, process development engineer, said Moldflow was chosen as a partner because of the success the two companies had developing software for gas assisted injection molding.
