MONTERREY, MEXICO - Bag Empaques Flexibles SA de CV, a film extruder and seller of tissue and produce bags, has opened a sales and distribution center called Tex-Plas in San Juan, Texas, in an effort to expand its market from Northeastern Mexico into the United States. Bag Empaques, based in Monterrey, is focusing on convenience stores and supermarkets in larger U.S. border cities between Laredo, Texas, and Brownsville, Texas, said owner and director general Jorge Rhi-Sausi.
He said some prospective customers are sourcing their bags from Far East or Southern California producers and are eager to find a Mexican supplier to take advantage of the favorable dollar-peso exchange rate.
Rolando Garza has been named general manager of the Tex-Plas office. Rhi-Sausi said he is studying the possibility of starting a film extrusion operation in Texas next year.
GW Plastics adding 18th injection press
SAN ANTONIO - GW Plastics Southwest's plant in San Antonio is nearly full. Injection press No. 18, a Van Dorn Demag with 170 tons of clamping force, is being installed this week.
Alan Gorman, vice president and general manager of the southwestern subsidiary of GW Plastics Inc. of Bethel, Vt., said there is room for one more press before the plant is at capacity.
The plant has all Van Dorn Demag presses with the exception of one Arburg.
GW opened the 30,000-square-foot facility in September 1992, to serve one customer operating a maquiladora on the Texas/Mexico border. At that time, the plant had four presses and four employees.
Today, Gorman said the plant serves customers in the automotive, medical device and consumer electronics industries with just-in-time or next-day service to the border.
``That's the advantage of regional molding plants,'' Gorman said.
GW Southwest recently installed pad printing operations. It also provides in-house mold maintenance and repair and employs 45.
