This in reaction to Clare Goldsberry's July 31, Page 12 Viewpoint. While Ms. Goldsberry raises many valid points, her comments about statistical quality control show a deep misunderstanding of the subject.
SQC is a tool for measuring and improving the quality of processes. It can increase productivity, decrease downtime and reduce scrap. In other words, it can actually contribute to the bottom line. Ms. Goldsberry paints a picture of SQC being a ``costly procedure'' that the customer may not really need. SQC is a tool that benefits the producer, not just the customer.
Anyone who has their doubts about this invaluable tool must have never heard of Dr. Edward Deming or Japan.
