AKRON, OHIO - Degussa Corp. opened its new technical center in Akron that will provide support for the company's carbon blacks, silicas and organosilanes. The 20,000-square-foot center replaces two separate Applied Technology facilities Degussa operated in Akron.
Carbon blacks are produced for applications in plastic compounds, as reinforcers and fillers. Silicas impart free flow, thickening and stability. Organosilanes have applications overlapping carbon blacks and silicas.
Degussa, based in Ridgefield Park, N.J., reports annual sales in excess of $3 billion.
Roehlen coatings plant in operation
YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO - Roehlen Industries announced the opening of a high-tech, metal-polymer composite coating facility at its headquarters in Youngstown.
Martin D. Pallante, Roehlen president, said the new coating can be applied to most ferrous and selected nonferrous metals.
Applications for Tribocoat, the coating's trade name, include molds for forming plastic parts. Roehlen is a division of Standex International Corp.
Huntsman acquiring MA, LAB producer
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. - Huntsman Corp. announced a plan to acquire Huntsman Specialty Chemicals Corp.
Huntsman made the announcement at the BT Securities High Yield Conference in Scottsdale, held Sept. 28.
The firm anticipates the proposed acquisition will be accomplished by the end of the year, said Richard P. Durham, executive vice president and chief financial officer.
HSCC produces maleic anhydride and linear alkylbenzene. maleic anhydride is the primary material in the production of unsaturated polyester resins for fiberglass boats, automobile bodies, showers and tubs. Linear alkylbenzene is the key ingredient in cleaning agents for industrial and household detergents. Durham said these products will complement Huntsman's line of specialty chemicals and surfactants.
