SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. - Tech Group, a family of custom and proprietary plastics processing and mold-making firms, has completed the acquisition of Heinz Plastic Mold Co. and Heinz Plastics Ltd. in Elk Grove Village, Ill. Company officials selected the Midwest location to supply the engineering services required for customers of Tech Group's custom manufacturing divisions.
``More and more of our customers want us to be close to them to assist them with upfront design engineering, and product and mold development,'' said Ryke Fowler, spokesman for Tech Group.
The 22,000-square-foot facility is operational but undergoing refurbishing to accommodate additional presses and a 7,000-square-foot Class 100,000 clean room. Renovations should be complete by Jan. 1.
The Illinois company - renamed Tech Group Chicago - will focus on research and development, rapid prototyping of tooling and the building of high-technology molds, Fowler said. Three injection presses will be isolated in the clean room for engineering development and mold sampling.
The main manufacturing area will consist of six molding machines dedicated to pre-production and production runs.
The plant has six injection presses; however, plans include replacing some of the existing machines with new Cincinnati Milacron equipment, according to Fowler. Press sizes range from 35-300 tons of clamping force.
Tech Group Chicago contains a fully equipped mold-making department using computer-aided design and manufacturing with Pro-Engineer software. The company will serve a variety of industries.
Tech Group has facilities in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe, Ariz.; Portland, Ore.; Edinburgh, Ind.; and Puerto Rico. It was 36th in Plastics News' 1995 ranking of North American injection molders, and reported annual sales of $98 million for the year ended June 30.
