Siemens AG has introduced a Simatic S7-300 controller for injection molding, extrusion, blow molding and thermoforming. The S7-300 is based on the Simatic S7 family of controllers, featuring modular design and the Coros operator panel. A central processing unit 614 serves as the controller's ``brains.''
In injection molding, the CPU 614 handles digital closed-loop control of the dosing and injection phases and open-loop control of mold movement.
Closed-loop temperature control is accomplished over 16 channels. The system also controls screw drive and other press functions.
For extrusion, the system boasts closed-loop control for 48channels. The S7-300 can be set up as a two- or three-state controller. The unit controls a number of functions such as screw drive, melt pressure and ``edge'' control that guarantees stepless changeover between manual and automatic operation.
In blow molding, the S7-300 controls temperature, wall thickness, screw speed, fast mold closing, mandrel locating and
other functions. In thermoforming, the unit controls heat-ing elements and includes a positioning function module that ensures smooth acceleration.
Siemens AG of Nuremberg, Germany, showed the new controller at the K'95 show, held in Dusseldorf, Germany. In the United States, the controllers are available from Siemens Industrial Automation Inc.'s Plastics Machinery Controls Division in Alpharetta, Ga.

Cinpres Ltd. targets converted presses
Tamworth, England-based Cinpres Ltd. has launched a new range of equipment for supplying nitrogen to injection presses converted to the Cinpres gas-assisted injection molding process.
Cinpres Gas Centres self-contained units occupy only 7 square feet of floor space. The units pass compressed air through molecular carbon sieves to produce nitrogen at very high purity.
Unlike the Cinpres gas-injection conversion units, Gas Centers is not limited to Cinpres licensees.
