Scientific Process & Research Inc. of Somerset, N.J., has developed a new screw, the SDS-II, for processing unmelted pellets during the extrusion process. The patented screw directs the unmelted plastic to an inner extruder barrel with a screw fixed to the extruder breaker plate.
The polymer is processed to maintain low melt temperatures, improved process stability and increased strength and throughput. The material is then returned to the melt channel.
The SDS-II screw has been used in the production of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester and nylon products.
The company claims the design helps reduce wear on the screw and barrel.
