As a result of Plastics News' resin price reporting policy - to report what has happened, rather than predict what may happen - there are times when our printed pricing information appears to conflict with market conditions. This is one of those times.
Industry sources last week brought to our attention the fact that greater price decreases for polyethylene occurred in December than we previously had reported, and we note those declines in today's issue. Meanwhile, as previously reported, PE producers have announced 5 cent-per-pound price increases that are to take effect in February. Those increases still are pending.
The juxtaposition of a de-crease being shown in print while an increase is on many bargaining tables may cause confusion. However, we believe it is the most responsible course to report such decreases when we learn about and confirm them.
