MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, OHIO - Advanstar Holdings Inc., the publishing firm that sponsors the Plastics Fair trade shows, announced Jan. 12 it is planning the sale of its 55 business publications and 54 expositions and conferences. Advanstar Holdings announced it has retained Goldman, Sachs & Co. as a financial adviser for the sale.
Besides sponsoring several plastics exhibitions, including the Western Plastics Exposition and the various Plastics Fairs, Advanstar formerly published Plastics Machinery & Equipment, Plastics Design Forum, Plastics Compounding and Advanced Composites magazines for the plastics industry. The company closed those publications in December 1994, after a failed attempt to sell the publications.
Now, the company publishes trade magazines and journals for the health-care, pharmaceutical and scientific fields, computer and communications technology markets, and various retail and service industries.
Advanstar also continues to publish Plastics Compounding Redbook, an annual directory of plastics compounders. It also continues to produce direct-mail advertisements for the plastics industry, said Mary Abood, spokeswoman for the company.
Abood said the publishing and trade conference business is being sold as a complete, ongoing venture, and that it is the sole operating unit of Advanstar Holdings. There is no deadline for finding a buyer.
Advanstar has 900 employees at offices in Middleburg Heights, New York, Santa Ana, Calif., Eugene, Ore., and Chester, England.
The company traces its publishing and trade conference roots to the early 1900s. It previously was known as Edgell Communications and, before that, as a division of the Harcourt-Brace-Jovanovich publishing company.
