Reporter Bill Bregar gathered the following new product announcements from the International Housewares Show, held Jan. 14-17 in Chicago.
Just when you thought there was nothing new in trash bags comes ... Zeta Consumer Products Corp.'s recycled-content bag with essential oils direct from the rain forest.
Zeta, of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., bills the Rainforest Scent Renew bag as the first scented trash bag made of 100 percent recycled content.
The bags sport a clove smell. Zeta, through outside suppliers, uses clove stem oil and gurjun balsam oil, sustainable products from plants in Malaysia and Indonesia.
The bags will be in stores in time for Earth Day in April.

New drawstring bag economically priced
Bag maker North American Plastics Corp. of Aurora, Ill., showed a new drawstring bag under its Iron-Hold brand name.
The three-ply, linear low density polyethylene bag is priced to be competitive with the national brands' twin-tie bags, said Gary Kerlagon, president and chief executive. He credited manufacturing efficiencies.

Mr. Coffee, meet Mrs. Tea.
Mr. Coffee's newest hot tea maker has a 24-hour programmable clock/timer and a ceramic teapot. The Bedford Heights, Ohio, firm would not say who molds the product's polypropylene parts and heat-resistant phenolic ring that circles the heat plate. Mr. Coffee is a division of Healthometer Inc.

Hamelin trash can has bag dispenser
Canadian molder Hamelin Enterprises, a division of Groupe Hamelin Inc., showed a new, small, refuse can with several features. The hinged lid opens with a foot pedal. A dispenser compartment in the lid holds up to 20 bags, A tray at the bottom catches leaks.
Hamelin molds the polyethylene parts at its headquarters plant in Boucherville, Quebec.

PP replaces rubber on Cosco step stools
Cosco Inc. of Columbus, Ind., has replaced metal-and-rubber steps with ones molded from polypropylene on two of its products, the One Step and Two Step Folding Step Stools.
Both products are about 20 years old, the company said.
A new product, the Pro Step, has the plastic steps and, at the top, a PP platform to hold paint or tools.

Leverage the key to PC ice scraper
Just in time for the next blizzard comes the Power Stroke ice scraper from Koller-Craft Plastic Products, a Fenton, Mo.-based custom and proprietary molder that is a division of Koller Enterprises Inc.
The handle is a strong assembly that fits around the arm, allowing the user to get full arm power. A polycarbonate scraper end pivots, scraping ice when moved both forward and back. Koller-Craft injection molds both parts.
The same handle also is used on another product-a back massager.
Also new from Koller-Craft: a plastic birthday cake carousel stand that winds up, then spins and plays ``Happy Birthday.''

Lap traf facilitates driving while dining
Molor Products Co. of Naperville, Ill., showed a lap tray for motorists to hold food and drinks in the car.
Molor designed the product and owns the molds. The company outsources injection molding but a Molor spokesman would not identify the molder. The tray is straight PP, but the company may go to a filled PP for more rigidity, he said.

Frem Corp. features new landry products
Housewares molder Frem Corp. of Worcester, Mass., a unit of Ecko Housewares Inc., showed a laundry organizer for separating clothes from detergent, and a 72-quart Rolling Hamper on wheels.
The products are high density polyethylene. The firm also redesigned its PP storage bins, which now come in both a larger and smaller size.

ABS device gives bathroom reminder
It's billed as ``the handle with a message,'' it's the Potty Guard, an ABS handle that sticks to the underside of the toilet seat and is imprinted with the words ``Please Close Toilet Seat.''
