Twelve more municipalities in the Montreal area have joined a plastic film recycling program sponsored by the Plastic Film Manufacturers Association of Canada and the Environment and Plastics Institute of Canada. About 25,000 households in the Beauharnois-Salaberry region joined the program early this year. Officials estimate the expansion will divert another 123,000 pounds of waste annually from landfill. The recycling program collected about 130,000 pounds of post-consumer film from seven other Montreal municipalities in its first year.
Polychem Products Canada Ltd. of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Quebec, will process film collected in the program. Film producers that will use the recycled plastic from the expanded collection program are Balcan Plastics Ltd. of St. Leonard, Quebec; DuPont Canada Inc. of Mississauga, Ontario; PCL Plastics Corp. of Oakville, Ontario; and W. Ralston (Canada) Inc. of Brampton, Ontario.
In Ontario, 146 municipalities with 620,000 households participate in curbside film recycling.
