HOUSTON - The Builders' Show this year could be remembered as the dawn of a new era for garage doors made of plastics and composites, in a period when steel doors still rule. Steel doors are about 90 percent of the garage door market, said Steve Coker, district sales manager for Overhead Door Corp. of Dallas.
At the Houston show, Overhead Door introduced a door with extruded vinyl profiles and sheet from Royal Plastics Group Ltd. of Toronto.
Overhead Door makes steel and wood garage doors.
Rival door-maker Clopay Building Products Co. was showing a prototype door made of fiber-reinforced composites sheet.
Pat Lohse, director of market development for the Cincinnati firm, said the door would have an outer skin from sheet molding compound and a steel inner skin. The door, being tested by Clopay, has a foamed polystyrene core.
Lohse said a commercial introduction may come later this year. The door has been designed so that it cannot pinch fingers, said Lohse.
