ANAHEIM, CALIF. - Thermoformer Plas/Sys Inc. is expanding its Asian presence with a new plant in Bangkok, Thailand. The San Jose, Calif., company opened a plant in Penang, Malaysia, two years ago and already has annual sales in Asia of about $15 million. Now the firm is putting the finishing touches on a $4 million plant in Bangkok, said Ernest J. Spina, vice president of marketing & sales.
The Bangkok plant will have six Lyle thermoforming machines and about 135 employees, Spina said. The plant is scheduled to open in four months.
Plas/Sys specializes in thin-wall ther-moformed packaging. Spina was interviewed Feb. 6 at the Medical Design & Manufacturing West show in Anaheim.
``We're very heavy in the electronics industry, especially packaging for disk drives,'' Spina said. ``Our customers went to Asia, so we followed them.''
In North America Plas/Sys has one plant, in San Jose. But in Asia the firm expects to record $25 million in sales next year.
The Malaysian plant has three Lyle machines - a fourth is planned - in a 60,000-square-foot building, Spina said.
``We use a lot of high-tech, sophisticated materials,'' including antistatic and washable sheet products, he said.
In addition to the thermoforming machines, the Bangkok plant will feature tray washing equipment.
